There are tons and tons of forums, posts, articles those days about seo. A found a lot of contradictory information about it. Considering the many things I encountered lately I’m sure that there are only a few guys out there knowing what seo means and a lot of people that propagate some information which is false or obsolete. That’s why I decided to compile this list despite the fact that it might be as wrong as other Seo information.
Myth 1 - Meta tags has a crucial role in Search Engine Optimization
- Optimizing Meta Tags will improve the position in SERP (Search Engine Results Page) - most of the people agrees that Meta Tags are useless those days, and only new comers consider it important. A few years back meta tags were important, but those days they are irrelevant in most search engines, because the abuses done in this field. One thing you might take in consideration is the fact that some search engines might use the description field not to give a better rank, but to display it in the SERP. In present neither Google or Yahoo are using it.
Myth 2 - Submitting a url to thousands and thousands of directories will increase the page rank
- This is another myth started in the middle ages of the Internet and still popularized by varied submitting services companies. On that time having lot of incoming links was important for the search engine optimization and to attract visitors. Currently not so many people uses directories to find something, and search engines don’t relay on all the low value directories. Most of the directories have a low page rank. Even when speaking about directories with good page rank the added value by the backlink will be small because the link does not come from the homepage where the PR is big and because there are many links dividing the links juice from the specific directory page.
Myth 3 - Submitting an URL to thousands of search engines will bring additional traffic
- Maybe this is true in theory. In practice the first 9 search engines covers 99.99% of the market share in English. The rest of 0.01% is covered by the remaining thousands of search engines. Simply put it doesn’t worth wasting time or money for adding your url to thousands of search engines. This myth is also started a long time ago when the search engines market was more fragmented, but today things are changed.
Myth 4 - The magical keyword density is 3%
- From what I’ve read on different forums, most of Seo experts agrees that there is no standard keywords density for an article. The best way is to focus on content and to write it in natural manner without forcing certain expressions. However there are many people stating different formulas. If there is a magical formula then nobody know it except a few people at Google and Yahoo and this formula would change all the time. The rule here is to write articles keeping in mind the target keywords, without forcing unnatural expressions just to obtain a fixed keywords distribution.
Myth 5 - Submitting tons of links to directories and social bookmarking sites will attract penalties for your site.
- The truth is that Google might detect when large number of links are created in a short time to the mentioned sites and might ignore them. However penalties will not be added to your site because of this. Usually search engines avoids add penalties to urls and sites for issues that are outside of the webmaster’s control.
Remember that Seo techniques must be up to date, because what yesterday was good, tomorrow might be useless. For this reason I’ll try to keep this list updated with the latest Seo Myths.
